BEHIND-THE-EAR-HEARING-AIDS

Behind The Ear (BTE) built to carry more power, more battery, and more clarity behind every ear.

What is a BTE hearing aid, exactly?

A Behind-the-Ear (BTE) hearing aid keeps its main components in a small curved case that rests behind the ear. A thin tube runs over the top of the ear and into the canal, ending in a soft dome or a custom earmould that holds it securely in place.

Because the case sits outside the ear, there’s room for a larger battery, a more powerful amplifier and bigger, easier-to-use controls — which is why BTE remains the most prescribed style worldwide, for children and adults alike.

What's inside the case

Microphones

Pick up sound from the room and feed it to the processor.

Digital processor

Filters noise and shapes sound to match your hearing test.

Amplifier & receiver

Boosts the processed signal to the level you need to hear it.

Battery or rechargeable cell

Powers the device for a day to two weeks, depending on type.

Tube & dome / earmould

Carries sound into the canal and keeps the fit comfortable.

Standard BTE and slim-tube RIC — what's the difference?

“BTE” covers two related designs. Both sit behind the ear; they differ in where the receiver lives and how much power they can deliver.

STANDARD / POWER BTE

Built for severe to profound loss

The receiver stays inside the case, connected by an acoustic tube. This gives the most headroom for amplification, making it the go-to choice for severe and profound hearing loss, active children, and anyone who needs a rugged, easy-to-handle device.

RIC / RITE (slim-tube BTE)

Smaller, discreet, still behind the ear

The receiver moves down into the ear canal itself, connected by a thin wire instead of a tube. The case behind the ear shrinks accordingly — a popular choice for mild to severe loss where discretion and a more natural sound matter.

Why people choose BTE

The trade-offs other styles can't match

BTE gives up some discretion in exchange for performance most other styles can’t offer at the same price.

More power, more headroom

Handles severe and profound hearing loss that smaller in-ear styles can’t reach.

Longer battery life

Bigger batteries mean fewer changes — or a full day on a single overnight charge.

Easier to handle

Larger buttons and battery doors suit children, first-time users and anyone with dexterity concerns.

Built to last

The case sits clear of moisture and earwax, which means fewer repairs over the device’s lifetime.
